Calgary Food Bank sets world record

calgary food record Calgary Food Bank sets world recordThe Calgary Food Bank collected a whale of an amount of food in one day. The food drive yesterday took in more than 200 tonnes of food, or the weight of a blue whale, the heaviest animal on Earth. Food bank spokesman April Cruz said that amount of chow set a new record for the most amount of food collected in a single day.
More than 7,000 volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spent the week distributing bags to nearly 360,000 homes and businesses in Calgary and then returning to pick them up.
Six drop-off locations were also set up throughout the city and donations could be made at most grocery stores.
Volunteer scrutineers were on hand to verify each trailer filled with food brought to the food bank warehouse.

The results will be sent to Guinness World Records’ head office in London. The old record of 90 tonnes was held by Regina.
Last year, the food bank serviced 87,202 people and Cruz said that number has gone up slightly this year.
